For reasons unfathomable to the Philistines who witness this, General Tariq lets the Israelite Samson go free. Without hesitating, Samson confronts the lion unarmed and after a terrible struggle, overpowers it with his bare hands.
Just at this moment, a wounded desert lion bounds enters the camp and attacks Delilah. Here he sees Delilah for the first time and is immediately fascinated by her. One day he sneaks into a Philistine camp without having an exact plan on how he is going to proceed against them. Samson is still not fully aware of the role he is supposed to play for his people. Delilah, the king's beautiful, seductive and scheming niece insists on being present during these conversations. They deliberate about what can be done to restrain this Samson before a revolt breaks out. When King Hanun, his hot-tempered son Sidqa and General Tariq hear this, they are anything but enthusiastic. Soon the news spreads, not only to the Israelite villages but also to the Philistine royal palace in Gaza, that an Israelite by the name of Samson has killed several Philistines with his bare hands. Samson with his incredible strength could be a symbol, a hero, of this uprising! Initially Samson rejects the idea, but when Naomi provokes a confrontation with the Philistines he naturally hurries to her rescue. She tries to convince Samson to join a group of young people planning an insurrection. Since then Naomi has not only been in mourning, but she harbors an unbridled desire for retaliation. When she was a small child, her village was exterminated by the Philistines and her whole family butchered. During a walk Samson learns the young woman's story. Naomi, a pretty but rather melancholic girl, falls deeply in love with him. As time passes, Samson becomes an attractive young man and young women begin to interest him more and more. Samson is born and as foretold he grows into a boy with amazing strength. The stranger tells her that as one chosen by God Samson will fight the Philistines, will have immense strength at his disposal, but that he may never cut his hair (or drink alcohol) otherwise this gift will be lost. One day, a mysterious stranger appears to Mara and promises her that she will bear a son whom she is to call Samson. Much to their regret, they have not been able to have children.

A film such as Rabbit Proof Fence, with its Hollywood-like production values and clean three-act structure, may have had its heart in the right place but its perspective is that of an outsider trying – and failing – to understand. It's a movie that only an Indigenous filmmaker could have made. Yet without bludgeoning audiences with a moral, Samson and Delilah spotlights people for whom there is no “track”, no place of relative opportunity. When he siphons petrol out of a car at a petrol station, the point is subtly made that this is the equivalent of a hipster picking up a threefa of weed, a clubber racking up coke or speed, or a teenager guzzling down a bottle of Passion Pop.Īustralian cinema is stuffed to the gills with stories of suburban druggies who have messed up too many times, sat on the couch for too long, collected too many dole payments, veered too far from the track. Samson’s petrol-sniffing is one of Australian cinema’s most memorable portrayals of addiction, just on cheaper and nastier drugs than those available in the privileged world. Yet there is also a hard-hitting truthfulness to the film, its messages about racial inequity never preachy or overt, but a product of the unflinching bravery with which Thornton captures his characters and their environment. The two leads exchange almost no dialogue throughout the film, yet the chemistry between them feels achingly real and tender, as organic as the dust on the ground. The central romance unfurls patiently, as Thornton’s direction is anchored on the truism that actions speak louder than words. Addicted to sniffing petrol, Samson begins his courtship by throwing pebbles at Delilah ( Marissa Gibson), whose grandmother’s traditional artwork is sold by white men in the CBD for exorbitant profits the family never sees. It charts a relationship between two impoverished people who live off the map, both literally and symbolically, in an Indigenous community near Alice Springs. Written and directed by Warwick Thornton, the film won four AFI awards, played at Cannes and was acclaimed by critics around the world.
